Frequently Asked questions
whats a rope jam like?
Doors open at 7pm (12pm if its a day jam), you will be greeted at the door by SavageLadyGarden or Braxas and asked to sign in. Shoes, coats and bags are stored away, make your way into the main space. Free tea and coffee available, help yourself at any time. Warm uplighting and beautiful fairylight-filled jars add an atmospheric touch to the space. Gentle music (often classical) plays in the background.
No teaching at our Rope Jams, they are purely for socialisation and exploration. If you'd like to learn, you can find out more here. Everyone is welcome to attend, regardless of experience level. Yes, even if you have never done anything with rope before. You can expect to see people chatting, hugging, smiling, relaxing with a cuppa and of course, doing rope.
If you came alone, please feel welcome to join in with the conversation respectfully. Consent is key, do not touch anyone or their belongings without informed consent. Do not interrupt a scene! Please only use the suspension points if you are suitably experienced to do so. Rope takes many forms at our jams, some will be folks practicing, some will be intimate and some will be intense. You could expect to hear general chit-chat, laughter, moans of pleasure and pain, and maybe even crying!
The Dojo closes at 11pm (6pm if its a day jam) everyone says their goodbyes and gathers their things. See you at the next one!

What's training like?
Training starts at 7pm and we begin by 'opening the space' by sitting in seiza as a group and taking some deep un-guided breaths to clear our minds, leave our day behind and prepare for learning. After that, the practice begins. People that have attended before will pick up where they left off last week and new attendees will learn about Rope Safety and Consent before moving on to some simple one rope ties.
We teach everyone at their own pace which means that some people will make faster progress than others, but that's ok. We are there to guide you through your progression. Teaching in this way prevents some students feeling under-stimulated while others feel out of their depth allowing everyone to make steady and consistent progress.
The Dojo is brightly lit and there is no background music but you can expect there to be some general chit-chat although please don't talk over the instructors when they are teaching.
At approximately 8:30pm there is a short break, feel free to help yourself to tea, coffee or some of the snacks that are available. After the break, we change the direction away from technical training and more towards connection and exploration with your partner.
Class ends at 9:30pm, we debrief and 'close the space' in the same fashion as we opened it.

What's an intensive like?
An intensive is very similar to training, just longer! We open the doors at 10am and 'open the space'. We then spilt the day into sections of technical practice and connective exploration. We take a lunch break at approx 1:15pm, please bring a packed lunch or alternatively there is a Deli, Cafe, Chinese and a Subway nearby.
If you are planning to switch with your partner, now is the time to change your roles. The reminder of the day is spent in the same way as the start, technical training punctuated by connective exploration. The intensive finishes at 4pm and we 'close the space'.

Can I come alone?
Absolutely! Well, for most of our events anyway. Events like our Wednesday Training, Rope Jams, Day Jams, and Colouring Outside the Lines are totally suitable to attend alone. You might even meet someone there!
Can i bring my partner?
Absolutely! You can bring your partner(s) to any of our events! Just make sure that you reserve enough spaces.
Do i need to come to training every week?
Our training is designed for those that can attend regularly. Each technique builds upon the previous and regular and consistent practice is the best way to make progress. However, you don't need to worry if you miss some weeks, we appreciate that our lives are dynamic and weekly attendance isn't possible for everyone. You can just pick up where you left off.
What should I wear?
You are welcome to wear whatever you are comfortable in! For practice, we recommend comfy clothes that don't restrict your range of motion. Leggings, yoga pants, tracksuit bottoms etc. At the Jams people tend to dress up a little more, dress in whatever makes you feel confident!
We are a kink-positive venue so feel free to wear latex, lace, leather, lingerie or your choice of fetishwear. However, in the interest of respect for the neighbours, please present as vanilla in the communal areas.
There are no shoes to be worn in the Dojo.

How do i find a rope partner?
The best way to find a partner for rope practice is to attend our Jams and Wednesday Trainings or through our thread on Fetlife. These events are full of likeminded people that are often looking for rope enthusiasts for practice or play. As always, be respectful when approaching people.
do i need to bring my own rope?
We have ropes that you can borrow for your first lesson, after that you will need to have your own natural ropes to practice with. We have a fantastic range of handmade Jute rope that you can check out!
Do you offer 1-1 Tuition?
Absolutely! Private lessons are by far the best way to learn Kinbaku. Please use our enquiry form to find out more.
